Our Sustainable Contribution

During 2013, we launched a process to redefine our strategic approach to sustainability and the way we integrate sustainability principles in our business.

Sustainability has always been at the heart of what we do. However, we feel a next evolutionary step will be to capture our internal and external sustainability impacts in a way which will serve both as a management tool and a more precise communication platform for our stakeholders. It is therefore our intention to articulate a long-term sustainability strategy which serves our business objectives while creating value for our stakeholders.

Our Sustainable Priorities

In 2013, we laid the foundation for the development of this strategy by reviewing our sustainability impacts on all our stakeholders and establishing a set of priority sustainability issues.

In order to do this, we produced a Novus Sustainability Materiality Map, which identified 108 separate sustainability impacts and issues, categorized by their relative importance to different stakeholder groups. Following analysis and evaluation, using internal management expertise and knowledge of our stakeholders' priorities, we selected twenty issues from this list that represent our most significant sustainability impacts.

We reviewed this shorter list of sustainability issues with both internal and external stakeholders in early 2014. After further analysis of the feedback we received, we developed the “Novus Sustainability Priorities Compass,” which has our Corporate Vision at its core and five key areas of sustainability impacts. This Compass will inform our future sustainability strategy and has served as the basis for the content of this Sustainability Report.

Alignment with the GRI G4 Sustainability Reporting Framework

This Sustainability Report is written in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 framework (at core level). The G4 framework was launched in 2013. GRI is a non-profit organization that promotes the use of sustainability reporting. This enables companies and organizations to measure and communicate information about their sustainability impacts for the benefit of engaging and advancing trust with stakeholders and contributing to sustainable development.

G4 is considered to be the most advanced, leading global framework for sustainability reporting, and applies a new approach to meet the new guidelines. Fewer than 100 companies around the world have published sustainability reports in accordance with G4 guidelines at the time this report was written. Novus decided to become an early-adopter as we felt that G4 provides an improved approach to communicating our sustainability impacts, especially since sustainability practices have been at the heart of Novus for many years.

With our Novus Sustainability Priorities Compass, we aligned our priorities to the Material Aspects defined by the GRI G4 guidelines. A full GRI content index table, which shows the location of different disclosures as defined by the framework can be found in Part Four of this report.
